How will the students learn?

Detail of activities / strategies used to engaged students:

·         Monday:

o   Opening: Irony Review

o   Work Session -

§  Instruction (I do):

a. Unit 2 Pre-test (Common Assessment)

b. Teacher will introduce Unit 2: Defining Style and Rhetorical Appeals in the Springboard books on page 69. 

§  Guided Practice (We do): Teacher will begin teaching Unit 2 Vocabulary – Ethos,  

Pathos, Logos (pg.69); Students will take notes in their interactive notebooks. 

We will read “America’s Schoolchildren” a Speech written by Barack Obama on page 70. 

§  Independent Practice (You do): Students will complete the Second Read/Comprehension questions on pages 74-75. 

o    Closing:  Students will share/review their answers with an elbow partner. 



·         Tuesday:

o   Opening: Independent Reading

o    Work Session -  

§  Instruction (I do): Teacher will explain the QHT Chart to the class and walk the students through completing their individual chart to be placed in their notebook (Unit 2 Vocabulary)

§  Guided Practice (We do):

a. As a class we will decide where each vocabulary word for this unit should be placed on our QHT Chart (Questions, Heard, Teach)

b. Teacher will show students various commercials that show Ethos, Pathos & Logos and students will have to identify how the rhetorical appeal was used.

§  Independent Practice (You do): Students will complete Rhetorical Appeals Mini-project.

o    Closing: Ticket out the door: Students must complete the draft of project and be prepared to turn in their final tomorrow.



·         Wednesday:

o   Opening: Ethos, Pathos, Logos Review (Project Due!)

o    Work Session -  

§  Instruction (I do): Teacher will teach a mini lesson on Claim, Thesis Statement, Counterclaim and Argumentative Writing.

§  Guided Practice (We do): We will reading both “Why College Isn’t for Everyone” and “Actually, College is Very Much Worth It” in the Springboard book. 

§  Independent Practice (You do): Students will complete #1-7 on page 88 & 89 in the Springboard books. 

o    Closing: Review Second Read questions as a whole class. Students should check their answers during the review for accuracy.



·         Thursday: MEDIA SPECIALISTS LESSON



·         Friday:

o   Opening: Independent Reading

o    Work Session -

§  Instruction (I do): Teacher will review Claim, Thesis Statement, Counterclaim and Argumentative Writing.

§  Guided Practice (We do): As a whole class, we will review an Argumentative Essay Template.

§  Independent Practice (You do):

a. Using the articles from yesterday, students will decide on a claim to base their Argumentative Essay: Is a college degree is necessary in today’s society?

b. Students will start completing their Argumentative Essay Template
Closing: THINK, PAIR, SHARE – Students will check their template with a partner
